- PublicationDancing fear and desire: Race, sexuality, and imperial politics in Middle Eastern dance(2006-01-01)
;Karayanni, Stavros StavrouKarayanni, Stavros StavrouThroughout centuries of European colonial domination, the bodies of Middle Eastern dancers, male and female, move sumptuously and seductively across the pages of Western travel journals, evoking desire and derision, admiration and disdain, allure and revulsion. This profound ambivalence forms the axis of an investigation into Middle Eastern dance-an investigation that extends to contemporary belly dance. Stavros Stavrou Karayanni, through historical investigation, theoretical analysis, and personal reflection, explores how Middle Eastern dance actively engages race, sex, and national identity. Close readings of colonial travel narratives, an examination of Oscar Wilde's Salome, and analyses of treatises about Greek dance, reveal the intricate ways in which this controversial dance has been shaped by Eurocentric models that define and control identity performance. - PublicationThe politics of education: challenging multiculturalism(2012-01-01)Education is a thoroughly political enterprise. The process of determining the purpose of education has always been highly controversial. it has resulted in disputes that have not only divided people philosophically, but also on the basis of religion, region, class, race, and ethnicity. As a result, education provides us with a spectacular arena in which to explore the tensions inherent in European and North American societies, as well as an understanding of how current politics shape education policy. This book focuses on the politics of education, relating to the formation of national identities as affected by globalization and multiculturalism. it assesses the ways in which governance institutions, political ideologies and competing interests, both within and outside of the education community, influence the content, form, and functioning of education. As a collection of studies of the political aspects of education and educational policy-making, this book reaffirms that educational phenomena reflect and inevitably serve specific political agendas. Political scientists, sociologists and education scholars will find this to be an important and valuable text.

One possible explanation may be the fact that although 70% of cardiac arrests take place in out-of-hospital settings, the majority of the victims do not receive basic life support (BLS) prior to the arrival of emergency medical services (EMS). Survival of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims strongly depends on prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Survival rates will only improve, if delay time until initiation of CPR is kept to an absolute minimum. Good quality CPR, with an emphasis on chest compressions is a key component for the victims' survival. Drugs play a secondary role in the treatment of these patients. This book presents the latest research in drug therapy in CPR.
- PublicationPolitical marketing: Strategic campaign culture(2013-01-01)
;Gouliamos, Kostas ;Theocharous, AntonisNewman, Bruce I.A guiding principle in creating Political Marketing has been to examine the ways in which culture, politics, and society interrelate in the field of political marketing. in the course of the book, the editors and contributors consider ‘culture’ as a distinctive concept with transformative capacities that need further and deeper development in the engineering of the political marketing process. Indeed, understanding and adapting a broader ‘campaign culture’, political marketing models may be seen as sets of pathways of key resources resulting viability in human assets, forms of influence, class stratification, alternative flows of information or networking and intercultural knowledge - sharing activity. This book consists of 18 chapters which deal with aspects of political marketing and ‘campaign culture.’ Theoretical chapters are found first, followed by two chapters that deal with theoretical issues which became a subject of research. Next presented are the articles that study aspects of electoral behavior, followed by the papers that analyze aspects of nationalism & national identity. Finally, the book concludes with three case studies on various issues in political marketing - PublicationThe marketing of war in the age of neo-militarism(2013-01-01)
;Gouliamos, KostasThe post-9/11 era and the overall impact of international terrorism have generated much debate regarding the role of military apparatus in modern society. This book assesses the inherent meaning of the militarization from a critical, interdisciplinary perspective. Against the background of democracy and capitalism, The Marketing of War in the Age of Neo-Militarism challenges prevailing accounts of the "military-industrial complex" as it explores significant interrelated themes denoting the accelerating process of militarization of society. Designed to address pressing socio-political phenomena, this book is the first of its genre contesting conventional wisdom about the perceived link between war and the "military-industrial complex." It is unique not merely because of its approach, but also for its thorough analysis of deeply affected social institutions and processes such as education, popular culture, geopolitics, military expenditure, space and the environment. Contributing authors advance the discussion by exposing factual information demonstrating the nature and scope of society’s militarization. Their analysis is also broadened to encompass key concepts and diverse aspects of the subject matter that provoke a lively debate. The book offers compelling arguments that will be indispensable to scholars, students, professionals, and policy and decision makers with an interest in social and political sciences as well as in other related fields. - PublicationDynamic cloud resource migration for efficient 3D video processing in mobile computing environments(2015-01-01)
;Mavromoustakis, Constandinos X. ;Mousicou, Paraskevi ;Papanikolaou, Katerina ;Mastorakis, George ;Bourdena, Athina ;Pallis, Evangelos M.Mavromoustakis, Constandinos X.This chapter presents a Efficient 3D Video Processing…?>dynamic cloud computing scheme for efficient resource migration and 3D media content processing in mobile computing environments. It elaborates on location and capacity issues to offload resources from mobile devices due to their processing limitations, towards efficiently manipulating 3D video content. The proposed scheme adopts a rack-based approach that enables cooperative migration for redundant resources to be offloaded towards facilitating 3D media content manipulation. The rack-based approach significantly reduces crash failures that lead all servers to become unavailable within a rack and enables mobile devices with limited processing capabilities to reproduce multimedia services at an acceptable level of quality of experience (QoE). The presented scheme is thoroughly evaluated through simulation tests, where the resource migration policy was used in the context of cloud rack failures for delay-bounded resource availability of mobile users. - PublicationVernacular worlds, cosmopolitan imagination(2015-06-12)

- PublicationPeace education in a conflict-affected society: An ethnographic journey(2016-01-01)
;Zembylas, Michalinos; ;Charalambous, PanayiotaZembylas, MichalinosPeace education initiatives have been subject to heated public debate and so far the complexities involved have not been fully understood. This multilayered analysis examines how teachers negotiate ideological, pedagogical and emotional challenges in their attempts to enact a peace education policy. Focusing primarily on the case study of conflict-affected Cyprus, Michalinos Zembylas, Constadina Charalambous and Panayiota Charalambous situate the Cypriot case within wider theoretical and methodological debates in the field and explore the implications of their findings for theory and practice. Building on current anthropological approaches, the authors use insights from policy studies and sociolinguistics to examine peace education agendas and the ways these are shaped by the dynamics of local politics and classroom practices. This study will be valuable reading for researchers of peace and policy studies as well as for practitioners and policy makers involved in introducing peace education initiatives that challenge teachers’long-held beliefs. - PublicationMuseums and photography: Displaying death(2016-12-08)
